Spring 2024 Rose Pruning @ Point Defiance Park Rose Garden
Mar 2 @ 7:00 am – 10:00 am

This focal point of Point Defiance Park has more than an acre of rose gardens, the oldest of which was established in 1895.

The site includes a garden of miniature roses, arbors of climbing roses, a picturesque wishing well and quaint gazebos.

From June through September more than 1,500 rose bushes provide a rainbow of colors including many variegated combinations. The garden is accredited by the American Rose Society as an All American Rose selection display garden..

The Rose Garden has two areas available for rentals – the big border and the gazebo.

Northwest Sinfonietta : Pictures at an Exhibition @ Rialto Theater
Mar 2 @ 7:30 pm

PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION
Northwest Sinfonietta
Yaniv Attar, conductor?
Hector Del Curto, bandoneon

Debussy (arr. Lee), Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun
Piazzolla, Aconcagua (Bandoneon Concerto)
Mussorgsky (arr. Lindberg), Pictures at an Exhibition

Each movement of Mussorgsky’s masterpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition, was inspired by a piece of artwork by Viktor Hartmann, including hatching chicks, children at play, Baba Yaga’s hut, and more. Northwest Sinfonietta is again teaming up with Spaceworks Tacoma to create and incorporate new works by local artists inspired by this classic work. Bandoneon soloist Hector Del Curto joins Northwest Sinfonietta for Piazzolla’s Aconcagua for solo bandoneon, harp, piano and strings. Bandoneon is the instrument of Argentinian tango, which Astor Pizzolla mastered and revolutionized, and this concerto is arguably the ‘aconcagua’ or peak of his body of work. Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun opens the concert, casting its spell of warm sunshine and half-remembered dreams.

Rent @ Tacoma Little Theatre
Mar 8 @ 7:30 pm

TLT and the University of Washington-Tacoma Theatre Department team up again!

Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals, and Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
