Stayed on Freedom: A Book event with Michael Simmons and Dan Berger @ Tacoma Arts Community Center
Feb 28 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

The Black Power movement is often associated with iconic spokespeople, but its momentum was due, in part, to the work of those with untold stories. UW-Bothell Professor and historian Dan Berger’s new book Stayed On Freedom: The Long History of Black Power through One Family’s Journey focuses on the story of Zoharah Simmons and Michael Simmons: two unheralded, grassroots Black Power activists who dedicated their lives to the fight for freedom.
Michael Simmons will join author Dan Berger for a discussion about his life and the recently released book, moderated by Social Justice Fund NW Executive Director Valériana Chikoti Bandua Estes.

RSVP here: https://forms.gle/t6qqkdjfaZ1G9x3i9

Dan Berger is professor of comparative ethnic studies at the University of Washington Bothell. He is the author or editor of several books and curates the Washington Prison History Project. His most recent book is Stayed on Freedom: The Long History of Black Power Through One Family’s Journey, just published by Basic Books.
Michael Simmons has been a domestic and international human rights activist for 60 years. Beginning as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and later as Director of European programs for the American Friends Service Committee, Michael’s work has taken him to Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. For 18 years, he co-founded and ran the Ráday Salon, an independent human rights learning and discussion program in Budapest, Hungary. He also taught courses on African American History and US Elections at the Budapest campus of McDaniel College

Site Steward Workshop with Nisqually Land Trust @ Eatonville Community Center
Mar 4 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Do you have a love for the land, and the plants, animals and the other life it supports? Do you want to help take care of the special places you love? Do you like spending your free time walking through the woods?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, becoming a Site Steward with the Nisqually Land Trust may be a good fit for you. Our volunteer stewards “adopt” one of the Land Trust’s properties in the Nisqually River watershed, and periodically monitor it for positive and negative changes.

The Nisqually Land Trust (NLT) is a nonprofit that protects and stewards lands to permanently benefit the water, fish, wildlife, and people of the Nisqually River Watershed

We have over 6,000 acres of protected land, so the Site Steward Program increases our capacity to track changes and more effectively steward this land.

This Site Steward Workshop is an opportunity to learn about our Site Steward program and the work NLT is doing in the watershed. Current or returning site stewards are welcome to join us as well.

Please register through Eventbrite, so we have a headcount for the event. (Click on “Tickets” for the link.) You will also receive directions when you register.

Mar 18 @ 8:30 am

Greater Gig Harbor Foundation’s 2nd Annual Shamrock’n the Harbor is a 5K/12K family-fun run/walk. 100% of the proceeds from Shamrock’n the Harbor benefit the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation’s Gig Harbor Senior Center. The courses follow the gorgeous Cushman Trail, with a few rolling hills to keep those legs awake and working; and for those doing the 12K you’ll get a gorgeous view from the Narrows Bridge. All ages can get seriously Irish while jigging o’er the hills, dales, and trails along your Shamrock’n journey!

All runners and volunteers are invited to the Post Run/Walk Céilí at Dunagan’s Irish Pub in Gig Harbor. Join us for awards, music and more!
