A Structured Introduction to the Art of Aikido

Always wanted to train in a martial art? Looking for a fun way to stay fit? Needing some self-defense skills? Interested in diving deeper into the art of movement? The Aikido Beginners Series is for you!
The Beginner Series provides a structured introduction to the dynamic martial art of aikido – a great foundation begin your practice. In this 6-week series, we’ll cover the history and philosophy of aikido, dojo etiquette, safe falling and rolling, basic responses to a variety of strikes and grabs, and introduce aikido weapons work. Designed as a jumping off point for regular dojo membership, participants can join regular dojo classes at any time – before, during, or after the series.
No experience or equipment is necessary. Wear loose clothes that cover the knees and elbows and bring an open mind. A woman-led dojo, Tacoma Aikikai is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive space, mutually respecting people of all race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, background, faith, age, and ability.
Cost: $100. Sliding scale fees available and no one turned away for lack of funds.
Eligibility: Adults and teens age 16+.
Space is limited – please register early.

What is Aikido?
Aikido is a modern martial art developed in Japan. Known as “the way of harmony”, aikido neutralizes an opponent’s attacks through joint locks and throws. Through sincere training, students of all ages and abilities find confidence in conflict resolution, improved fitness and flexibility, and an overall sense of well-being.

Who is Tacoma Aikikai?
Tacoma Aikikai, rooted in the lineage and discipline of Japanese martial traditions, has offered community-centered and woman-led aikido martial arts instruction since 2016. Instructors Ea Murphy and Eric Gillet have decades of experience training and teaching aikido across cultures and continents.

Join us at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum to celebrate the sights, sounds, and smells of autumn at the Harvest Home festival. The day will include popular Victorian games, traditional music and dance performances.

Everyone is welcome to come down and press cider, make a corn dolly, and help us send off summer 19th century style.

Craftopia: CaTi Plants class @ Craftopia

These CaTi figures are super cute and fun to make. We provide the supplies and you can let your imagination run wild. You can paint the cat as well as the pot, chose to add flowers or not and even chose the types of rocks you would like for your pot. Follow our design or create your own.
$20 per person. Ages 8+. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Craftopia: Slime Time class @ Craftopia

Be a mad scientist in your very own slime lab! Create this wonderfully fun ooey gooey creation and add your own colors and decorations for something out-of-this-world! $5/participant. All ages and family friendly (children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult). This class only takes about 45 minutes, so start times may be staggered depending on the number of participants to make sure we can provide a safe learning environment for all.
