Pierce County Habitat Stewards Training @ Zoom - Virtual event

The National Wildlife Federation is offering a specialized, multi-week online training to teach you how to help others create and restore wildlife habitat in backyards, schoolyards, and other private and public areas. You get to meet and interact with local conservation professionals and other similarly interested folks while participating in this engaging, fun and highly informative online program!

Benefits include: a comprehensive, digital training manual with local resources; instruction from local professionals; and continued support from NWF staff.

Expert speakers will present on topics such as:

-Gardening for wildlife
-Improving soil quality
-Habitat restoration
-Mushrooms and fungi
-Bird friendly gardening
-And much more!

Classes will take place May 25th, 27th, June 1st, and 3rd from 6:00 – 7:00 pm via a free video conference platform.

A COVID-safe School Yard Habitat installation field trip will be held Saturday, May 29th and Sunday, May 30th. Participants are asked to attend one, but are welcomed to attend both events.

Summer Yoga at LeMay @ The Lawn at LeMay America's Car Museum

Self-care for Collective Care. Come together in community in the heart of our city for outdoor yoga. Yoga is an ancient holistic practice developed in S Asia but often seen as a luxury, with costs and accessibility only serving a select few. But when we practice yoga we have the opportunity to form deep and loving connections with other students, teachers and anyone else we meet on our journey — this practice can be a positive force in our personal lives. Now imagine the impact when we expand that force to our community.

Enjoy a mellow flow that combines purposeful movement and breath to cultivate mindfulness, a blend of beginner and intermediate asana (postures), and dynamic and static stretches to relieve tension in your body and mind so you feel good at the end of your day.

Summer Yoga classes are for all levels of experience. No yoga mat or yoga clothes required. Dress comfortably and bring a towel if you don’t have a yoga mat or don’t want to get yours dirty.

Orca Action Month Virtual Kick-off Event @ Zoom

Join the Orca Salmon Alliance as we kick off the 15th annual Orca Month. This year’s theme “We Are Family” underscores the distinct connection between Southern Resident orca lives and human lives.

Fort from Home: Puget Sound Treaty War Panel @ Fort Nisqually Living History Museum

Join us as we continue the conversation. The Puget Sound Treaty War Panel series resumes on Thursday, June 10th, 2021. The conversation will focus on the era leading up to, and include, the signing of the Medicine Creek Treaty.

The Puget Sound Treaty War (1855-1866) was the result of contested terms of the Medicine Creek Treaty, negotiated by Governor Isaac Stevens. The treaty, the first of several consecutive treaties negotiated by Stevens in quick succession, sought the relocation of local tribes to reservations in exchange for cash payments and the preservation of hunting and fishing rights. The treaty became a catalyst for the conflict.

The Treaty War remains central to Puget Sound history. This free program brings together a panel of historians to discuss the experiences and effects of these events. With representatives from Muckleshoot, Nisqually, Puyallup, Squaxin Island, Steilacoom Tribes, as well as Fort Nisqually Living History Museum, the panel offers a new dialogue among diverse communities impacted by the War and its aftermath.
Panelists include:

• Jerry Eckrom, Historian, Fort Nisqually Living History Museum

• Warren KingGeorge, Historian, Muckleshoot Indian Tribe
This panel will be moderated by Jennifer Ott, Assistant Director, HistoryLink.org.

Craft Saturdays at Job Carr Cabin Museum: Butterfly Suncatcher @ Job Carr Cabin Museum

Job Carr Cabin Museum is offering socially-distanced Craft Saturdays! Take-home craft kits include all the materials and instructions needed for a fun at-home activity.

June 12, Butterfly Suncatcher – Children can use the materials provided in this take-home craft kit to create a butterfly suncatcher.

Pick up a free craft kits from the Museum’s front porch, 11am – 1pm, while supplies last, at Job Carr Cabin Museum, 2350 N 30th St, Tacoma, WA 98403

Please use social distancing etiquette when you pick up your craft kit.
Instructional videos will also be posted on the Museum’s YouTube channel.

These Craft Saturday events are designed to meet state and local public health guidelines.
– All visitors must wear face coverings.
– Please maintain at least six feet distance from other museum visitors.
– Visitors will not be able to enter the museum building.
