Free Alzheimer’s educational conference for Washington residents @ Kimpton Hotel Monaco Seattle

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will hold a free educational conference on June 14th at 10:00 am PST that will provide Seattle-area residents with information about Alzheimer’s disease, brain health, caregiving, care planning, support services and more.
A Q&A will follow each session in which attendees can ask the experts questions. Participants will also have the opportunity to network with one other. There will also be free memory screenings conducted throughout the day.

Suffrage Special Afternoon Tea @ Point Defiance Pagoda

Join Tacoma Historical Society for an outdoor tea party in celebration of the arrival of the Suffrage Special delegation to Tacoma in 1909.

Representatives of the National American Woman Suffrage Association boarded a Northern Pacific train going from Chicago to Seattle for the 41st Annual Convention. Along the way they stopped in several cities, gave speeches and picked up more passengers all in the pursuit for women’s right to vote. In June of 1909, they stopped in Tacoma where they were given a tour of Point Defiance Park, served dinner and gave speeches at the Tacoma Building.

O?ur tea party will include tea, sandwiches, scones with jam and tartlets. Following tea, THS curator Elizabeth Korsmo will give a talk about the historical events behind the Suffrage Special and Barbara Callander will give a special performance from the Washington Women’s Suffrage Centennial play. Supplies will be provided for guests to make their own suffrage sash.

Period costume is encouraged but not required.

Registrations are also accepted on the day of the event for an additional charge of $5

Street fair, parade, and fireworks will follow this event

USATF Certified Course and Sanctioned Event
Event shirts available for purchase during online registration until June 30th at 11:59 PM
Scenic, mostly flat, road courses travel out-and-back along the waterfront
For everyone’s safety, pets are not allowed on the course
Prizes are given to the most patriotic dressed
Awards are available immediately after finishing

4 Mile Awards:
Ribbons are given to top 3 in each gender and age group
Medals are given to 1st place overall male and female

1 Mile Kids Awards:
Every kid receives a finisher ribbon and a small USA flag

Fire Rescue Spectacular @ Hands On Children's Museum

The Fire Rescue Spectacular, July 8, is the ultimate firefighter and first-responder experience for kids! At the free street fair kids can explore a fleet of emergency vehicles, meet first responders, take the Junior Fighter Challenge, enjoy free ice cream, and so much more!

Presented by Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Network in partnership with Olympia Fire Dept., and thanks to Access Partner Macy’s.

Free Street Fair Activities
• Explore Olympia’s fleet of emergency vehicles and meet first responders
• Meet Sparky the Fire Dog & Smokey the Bear
• See vintage fire trucks
• Experience the Spray Gallery
• Take the Junior Firefighter Challenge
• Enjoy special activities, festival food & free ice cream and popsicles

Inside the Museum
• See wacky Dr. Science demos
• Make an emergency candle or fire starter
• Learn how to start a campfire
• Explore first aid techniques
• Rescue toy animals from ice

Relay for Life of South King County @ Game Farm Park

One person can make a difference. In May 1985, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer.

Gordy spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at the University of Puget Sound. Friends, family, and patients watched and supported him as he walked and ran more than 83.6 miles and raised $27,000 through pledges to help save lives from cancer. As he circled the track, he thought of how he could get others to take part. He envisioned having teams participate in a 24-hour fundraising event. The next year, 19 teams were part of the first Relay For Life event at the historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000.

After previously battling stomach cancer, Gordy passed away from heart failure on August 3, 2014 at the age of 71. But his legacy lives on. He shaped an idea that started as one man walking and running a track and helped turn it into a global fundraising phenomenon.

Tacoma Bon Odori Festival @ Tacoma Buddhist Temple

Our Tacoma Buddhist Temple Bon Odori Festival is back after 3 years! As part of our religion, we honor those who have passed by celebrating them through Japanese traditional dancing called Bon Odori. Everyone is welcome to dance, enjoy the food or just watch the dancing and taiko performances. 4pm: Food, beer garden, info booths, Japanese items for sale and Kings Books table. 4:30: Obon service. 5pm: Dancing and taiko drumming will occur in front of our temple on Fawcett Avenue up from UW Tacoma. 8pm: memorial candle service. Evergreen Tacoma College Tour: Explore a World Where Education and Community Meet @ Evergreen-Tacoma

TACOMA—The Evergreen State College Tacoma Campus is excited to announce its upcoming Summer College Tour scheduled from 1-4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17. This event will provide prospective students with a unique opportunity to explore a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs designed to pave the way for rewarding careers in various fields such as:

  2. Law, Justices and Public Policy
  3. Public Administration and Management
  4. Environmental Studies and Public Health
  5. Social and Human Services

  7. Early Childhood Development

During the tour, attendees can meet staff and faculty members who contribute to Evergreen-Tacoma’s reputation for academic excellence. Olmsted Legacy @ Washington State Capital Campus

Join us on the Washington State Capitol Campus to explore the Olmsted legacy. Historian and filmmaker Laurence Cotton will dive deep into the remarkable life and career of Renaissance-man Frederick Law Olmsted, considered to be the father of landscape architecture in the United States.

Cotton will give a visual tour of masterful landscapes designed by Olmsted, with an added focus on the Pacific Northwest landscape legacy of John Charles Olmsted, Frederick’s nephew and adopted son. Historian Jennifer Ott will also present, focusing on Olmsted landscapes in Puget Sound region. Conclude with a guided tour of the Capitol Campus led by Washington State’s horticulturalist Brent Chapman.

Light refreshments will be served.
