Workshop: How Does a Place Get a Name? @ Washington State History Museum

Join Indigenous educator Owen Oliver (Quinault/Isleta Pueblo) to explore how a place gets a name and what the names of specific locations can teach us about values held by communities. Participants will consider how we can use place names to enhance community connections and build strategies to engage with Tribes to revitalize place names.

This workshop is free and open to the public. Teachers who attend the workshop will be eligible for clock hours toward continuing education requirements.

Join THS at the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum for a free public festival commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Northern Pacific Railway arriving in Tacoma.

Join us for a celebration of Tacoma’s diverse history! This year’s festival commemorates the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad to Tacoma and focuses on those in and coming to Tacoma were affected by that change.

This event is free to the public and will feature hands-on activities, performances, exhibits, heritage & cultural organizations, vendors, and food trucks! Women’s Intro to Woodworking @ Foss Waterway Seaport

Join us for an intro-level woodworking class for women and nonbinary folks!
In this one-day class, you will learn how to use an assortment of woodworking power and hand tools to fabricate a toolbox. You will be guided through transferring measurements from paper plans, cutting lumber to length, and assembling it into a finished product. Join us in the Heritage Boat Shop to explore the basics of woodworking in a hands-on, mentorship-based class, and take your new toolbox home!
Instructed by Alice Clabaugh (she/her), a graduate from the Wood Technology Marine Carpentry program.

History After Hours: End of the Line @ Washington State History Museum

Travel back in time to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Northern Pacific Railroad in Tacoma. Embark with WSHS to explore why the City of Destiny was named as the terminus for the Northern Pacific Railroad and consider the legacy of this decision. This evening of food, fun, and history is a 21+ event; IDs are required. Guests will receive two drink tickets.

Winter Solstice Festival @ Lakewold Gardens

The Winter Solstice (or Midwinter) marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, bringing with it the promise of increased sunlight in the days ahead. It is a time to embrace the darkness, connect with nature and honor the changing of the seasons as a reminder that every ending is also a new beginning.

In honor of the occasion, Lakewold Gardens will present a celebration of light featuring art, music and literature from diverse traditions. Festival guests will celebrate in the cozy, festively decorated Wagner House, enjoy live music by local musicians, participate in a luminary making activity, take evening walks in the darkened winter gardens, listen to dramatic readings of solstice-themed poems and short stories by Creative Colloquy (Thursdays only), and experience Coming to Light, a new exhibit by the Contemporary QuiltArt Association, with each work inspired by the theme of light.
