The Country That Fiction Built @ Virtual Pierce County Library

Explorations: Steilacoom Library Speaker Series
Join us virtually, as UW English professor Michelle Liu discusses how two great works of fiction have fundamentally changed our country’s outlook on race, morality and humanity.

Pierce County Library and Humanities Washington, in partnership with the Steilacoom Historical Museum, welcome you to this compelling conversation.

Ask who Atticus Finch is, and most will remember him from high school English as the heroic lawyer defending an unjustly charged African-American man in To Kill a Mockingbird. Ever since Harper Lee imagined him into life in 1960, the name “Atticus Finch” has become shorthand for a person who acts according to their conscience, not majority rule.

This talk delves into the many ways our country is deeply shaped by Harper Lee, as well as by the best-selling author who lived in the century before her—Harriet Beecher Stowe. Using To Kill a Mockingbird and Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin—the novel largely credited with moving the United States into the Civil War—Michelle Liu invites participants to think about how these two works of fiction still fundamentally shape, as well as limit, how we think about skin color, morality, and who counts as human. How can fiction help us imagine building more empathy and openness to those with experiences different from our own?

Michelle Liu is a professor in the English department at the University of Washington, where she specializes in teaching writing and exploring ideas about identity, history, emotion, and storytelling.

Puget Sound Partnership and the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission invite you to participate in the second of this year’s virtual Puget Sound Days on the Hill sessions on Friday, April 30, from 1:00–2:30 p.m. Pacific Time. We’ll discuss Puget Sound restoration and protection, salmon recovery efforts, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and infrastructure, among other topics, with Senator Patty Murray and Representative Kim Schrier.

Each member of Congress or special guest will speak for about 25 minutes. We encourage participants to submit questions for our speakers in advance when registering. There will also be an opportunity to post questions during a moderated Q&A session.

The Puget Sound Partnership and Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission invite you to participate in our next virtual Puget Sound Days on the Hill session on Friday, May 14, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time. We’ll discuss Puget Sound restoration and protection, salmon recovery efforts, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and infrastructure, among other topics, with Representative Pramila Jayapal.

We will also host a panel discussion with Jane Nishida, acting assistant administrator for the Office of International and Tribal Affairs at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Barry Thom, regional administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries’ West Coast Region, and officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ).

We encourage participants to submit questions for both the panel and Rep. Jayapal in advance, and questions must be submitted by 2 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, May 12. There will also be an opportunity to post questions during a moderated Q&A session.
