Explore how history connects us all during this half hour story time program designed for children ages 4–10 and their families. We’ll read Imagine, written by Juan Felipe Herrera and illustrated by Lauren Castillo. Herrera was the first Latino U.S. Poet Laureate (2015–17). After the reading, we’ll engage in a hands-on investigation of a related artifact.
This program will be conducted in English and in Spanish.
Legendary guitarist Dave Mason performs live with his band at the Rialto Theater in Tacoma on Saturday, September 9! A member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and founding member of the group Traffic, Mason has been performing for five decades and has collaborated with some of the industry’s most prolific artists like Paul McCartney, Graham Nash, and Jimi Hendrix. Henry R. Fenbert Challenging History Lecture

The second annual Henry R. Fenbert Challenging History Lecture features historian Monica De La Torre, assistant professor of media and expressive culture in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University.
De La Torre will discuss her first book, “Feminista Frequencies: Community Building through Radio in the Yakima Valley,” which tracks the emergence of Chicano community radio in rural farmworker communities in the 1970s. Her presentation will include a musical playlist featuring songs that illuminate the history explored in her research.

Celebrate the Music of 1973 at 50
Sammy Miller and The Congregation are on a mission, crisscrossing the country like a vaudevillian revival show with evangelic fervor for music. The seven-piece band is pulling people out of their solitary lives and putting them in the moment with a bracing dose of joyful jazz performed with infectious theatricality. Led by Juilliard trained and Grammy® nominated drummer, Sammy Miller and his seven-piece group is a community of adventurous and charismatic superstar musicians who are conservatory-trained but who have not lost their childlike wonder and awe for playing music. Since the band’s inception, the Congregation has played nonstop all over the world including Lincoln Center, The White House, and the Newport Jazz Festival where the group received a standing ovation.
