Solstice Lights Celebration @ Lakewold Gardens
Dec 1 @ 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Lakewold Gardens Prepares to Mark 2nd Annual Solstice Lights Celebration
Garden Embarks on Spectacular Display of Light, Music, and Earth Science for the Holidays

For the second time, Lakewold Gardens will play host to the vision of internationally regarded multimedia artist Sam Stubblefield and his team as the gardens’ old growth trees and wandering paths come to life with color, light, and sound. Each light display is an audiovisual response to live data about Earth’s activity received directly from NASA and NOAA in real-time, making the gardens not only a canvas of colorful light, but of ocean swells, magnetic fields, and wind currents! While many other displays will brighten up communities all over Puget Sound this season, Solstice Lights at Lakewold Gardens is the only lights spectacle bringing together light, sound, and the awesome power of Mother Nature for a truly awe-inspiring experience.

“I hope that our work at Lakewold Gardens gives every visitor a feeling of awe that one feels when we connect with the magnificence of nature,” Stubblefied says. “Bringing forward often unseen aspects of nature – from ocean currents to plasma moving through our solar system – makes for a deep and unusual immersion into natural wonder. You can smell the moss, breath the air of the garden, and be connected to the vastness of space at the same time.”

There will be three main lights displays in the gardens, each highlighting a different perspective of natural phenomena on our planet.
? At the iconic Wolf Tree clearing, light and sound will respond to activity in Earth’s magnetosphere sent from NASA and NOAA satellites.
? A second installation in Lakewold’s courtyard will react to oceanic data received from buoys floating in all of the world’s oceans.
? A third light display along the lakefront walkway will encourage wanderers to look at the world from the perspective of the cosmos.

About Lakewold Gardens: Lakewold Gardens is a botanical garden based in Lakewood, WA on the traditional lands of the Steilacoom tribe and Gravelly Lake, named Cook-al-chy by the land’s original stewards. Lakewold Gardens is a natural space where anyone can come and explore its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere frequently hosting annual festivals, recurring community activities, fine arts programming, and educational opportunities for youth about climate change and ecological science.
