Virtual Talk | Hear from the Curator: Departures and Divisions @ Tacoma Art Museum
Feb 6 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Join us for a discussion about Tacoma Art Museum’s newest exhibition, Departures and Divisions: Variation in American Styles, 1900 – 1950. Learn more about the exhibition as we consider the development of a distinctly American style of art. Throughout the 19th century, Europe and the Academies of Paris dominated the global artistic scene. In Europe, the Modernist movement began to reject traditional academic art and branched out into their own styles. When European Modernism reached the United States, American artists began to incorporate, reinvent, depart, and rebel against European art, developing their own unique styles and movements. We will discuss this new wave of American Modernism, Northwest contributions to these movements, and how these artists and ideas helped bring the United States to the center of the artistic world.
