Cascade Regional Blood Services, our region’s vital supplier of blood to local Multicare Health System hospitals and health centers, is devoted to supporting high school and college students around the South Sound. Each year, Cascade Regional Blood Service’s Give Back Scholarship awards four $500 scholarships to local students who attend partnering high schools and colleges throughout the greater Puget Sound region.
The Give Back Scholarship program aims to educate and increase awareness of the need to give back to others within our community as a blood donor. By celebrating and promoting community involvement, Cascade Regional Blood Services strives to share the importance of helping others through the act of blood donation, while helping students obtain transferable skills in fields such as leadership, marketing and health care.
Students who are interested in applying for the Give Back Scholarship must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and are required to complete and keep a record of 20+ hours of community service throughout the school year, clearly documented and signed off by a school supervisor. It is also required that applicants’ high school or university host one blood drive during the school year with the help of Cascade Regional Blood Service’s dedicated and friendly consultants, who help take care of all the details. Students applying for the scholarship are not required to donate blood.
This year’s deadline for the 2018–2019 school year lands on Friday, April 19, 2019. To apply for the Give Back Scholarship, students must fill out an online application form, complete and document their 20+ hours of community service work, write an essay using 500 words or less to describe their community service experience, and are also required to prepare a resume including three references. If awarded the scholarship, students are required to attend an institution of higher learning such as a community college, technical college or a four-year university in the following 2019–2020 school year.
“The quality of applicants last year was astounding, making it tough to just choose four winners. The students are so accomplished, well-rounded, and really have a heart for community and giving back,” Candy Morrison of Cascade Regional Blood Services tells us.
Last year’s 2018 Give Back Scholarship winners truly gave back to the community in outstanding ways. Isabel, a senior at Eatonville High School, volunteered at local hospital, Good Samaritan, while Victoria from Auburn’s Riverside High School volunteered across the world at a hospital in China. Natalie from Auburn’s Mountainview High School dedicated her community service hours to volunteering at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center’s Urgent Care branch, working as a rounding cart volunteer, and Eve from Tacoma School of the Arts volunteered over 600 community service hours and organized a Cascade Regional Blood Services blood drive at her school.
Through each of their community service experiences, these four students learned firsthand the importance of donating blood and volunteering within the community, while maintaining excellent scholastic achievements.
Cascade Regional Blood Services is honored to be a part of local students’ dreams and goals along their educational journey. Students and parents of students who are interested in this opportunity are encouraged to talk with their school counselor about the Give Back Scholarship, and how their school can take advantage of this opportunity. .
Each submission will be reviewed by a committee made up of individuals chosen from within the community who work in diverse fields such as medical, marketing, business, public relations, and community relations. Guidelines require submissions to adhere to Cascade Regional Blood Service’s Give Back philosophy. Each entry will be evaluated on quality, creativity, content, accuracy and persuasiveness. Only one entry per student is allowed and video submissions will not be considered.
Cascade Regional Blood Services is dedicated to supporting high school and college students throughout Pierce and South King County who are interested pursuing higher education.
