Do you feel like something is missing during the holidays? We don’t often get a winter wonderland to add that touch of magic synonymous with this time of year. Thanks to the City of Olympia Parks, Arts & Recreation, in partnership with Ice Rink Events, Oly on Ice is returning to add that glitter of snow and ice to make winter feel truly magical. I have many fond memories of skating at my hometown’s local ice rink when I was little – create your own priceless memories at Oly on Ice, happening November 22, 2024, through January 20, 2025.

“I hear from so many families and couples that their holiday season is not complete without one visit to the ice rink,” shares Scott River, City of Olympia director of recreation and facilities. “It brings a joyful activity to downtown when events are limited while also activating an otherwise quiet space during the cold, dark, wet months. Plus, it helps drive business to the surrounding area.”

Oly on Ice 2024-25 Details

Oly on Ice features a 5,000-square-foot ice rink in the heart of Olympia. In 2023, they had a record-breaking attendance of 23,138 skaters, with thousands more spectators! The beautiful pop-up pavilion, with snowflake decorations scattered around and strung lights, will make you feel like you are in a Hallmark movie – and who doesn’t want that?

Olympia’s ice-skating rink wouldn’t be possible without Ice Rink Events. The company is North America’s premier provider of seasonal outdoor skating rings, installing over 60 each year. They also do pop-up roller rinks in the spring and summer. They have been the vendor of Oly on Ice since its beginning six years ago. “We are blessed to have a solid service provider to partner with in Ice Rink Events,” says Scott. “They host seasonal rinks all over the country and work very hard at creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.”

“Oly on Ice offers a range of special events, such as Sensory Skate on Sundays and Mondays, designed for individuals who might be sensitive to noise and light,” shares Kellyn Koepplinger, Ice Rink Events senior project manager. “What sets Oly on Ice apart is their commitment to ensuring that every community member feels welcome. I really appreciate Oly on Ice’s emphasis on community. They genuinely make ice skating accessible and affordable for everyone in the community.”

In addition to Ice Rink Events, the City of Olympia wants to thank the Oly on Ice sponsors, including Premier Sponsors Small to Tall Pediatric Dentistry and the Squaxin Island Tribe, along with Puget Sound Energy, Twinstar Credit Union, Experience Olympia & Beyond, South Puget Sound Community College, Capital Mall, Thurston Talk, Showcase Magazine, KXXO MIXX96, KMAS, KGY/KAYO, Eastside Urban Farm & Garden and dozens more, who make this incredible holiday activity possible.

“Our sponsors help make this happen,” says Scott. “Without their contributions, we could not make this work.  Of course, the financial contributions are critical. But we also have sponsors and event partners that provide entertainment, ideas and feedback that continually enhance and improve the experience for our skaters as well as our staff.  When you have so many great people to connect with, it makes the work feel less overwhelming.”

Holiday Cheer Brings Community Together at Oly on Ice

From a safe space for teens to hang out, learn a new skill, and maybe even have their first date to a wonderful outing for the whole family, Oly on Ice brings the community together for the holidays. “Tweens and teens can socialize and stay active in a safe environment, with staff present to ensure things run smoothly, without making them feel like they’re being supervised,” shares Scott.

Young ones get to experience the thrill of learning to skate with guardrails. You might even see a proposal at this romantic holiday tradition. It’s all part of the charm of Oly on Ice.

“For me, the overriding sense of joy that I observe every time I visit is what makes Oly on Ice so special,” adds Scott. “Whether it is a slow day or packed with skaters, what really hits me every time are the smiles, laughs and comradery that always seems to drown out any challenges that people are being confronted with.  And that makes this event so satisfying every year.”
