You are now free to roam about the library. With the Internet that is. Cardholders visiting South Hill Pierce County Library can now check out one of 30 Chromebook laptops and keep it as long as they’re on the premises. The pilot program begins this week at South Hill and in January 2015 at Sumner Pierce County Library. If successful, the program may be rolled out at other library locations.
In contrast to the traditional library computers, checking out a Chromebook offers use of the laptop for all library open hours rather than a two-hour time limit. Customers can be untethered from a desk to surf the web, check email and engage in social media. The Chromebooks provide Internet access but do not offer printing or applications such as Microsoft Word or Excel.
