Get your cameras ready for December 19th- 22nd.  The Gig Harbor Lighthouse Association will be hosting a photo contest which is open to the public and easy to enter.  The contest was developed as a way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Gig Harbor Lighthouse, a welcome beacon to residents and visitors at the mouth of the bay.  In addition, the contest is meant to recognize the growth in our community and contrast the ‘then and now’.  The photo contest allows the public to upload digital photos, taken during 19th and 22nd, take part in online voting immediately afterwards, and be entered into a juried contest.   Entries can replicate photographs contained in the Harbor History Museum exhibit ‘A Day in the Life – photos from 1987’ which can be viewed at the Museum through January 4th. The committee is encouraging photographers to catch images of what Gig Harbor means to them in 2013.

When the Gig Harbor Lighthouse celebrates its anniversary day in April, time capsules originally sold twenty-five years ago and currently held in the Lighthouse, will be returned to the original owners.  The event will take place at Skansie Brothers Park, Saturday April 26th, 2014.  The year prior to the construction of the lighthouse, a similar photo contest to today’s, drew thirty-six photographers presenting 500 slides and the contest functioned as a fundraiser for the construction of the lighthouse.  Twenty-five years later, this contest is simply to draw “parallels” to yesteryear and provide perspective for the next twenty-five years.

To enter your photograph visit http://www.photoscramble.com and search for the Gig Harbor contest in the search box between December 19th and 22nd and upload your image ($5 per submission).  Voting will begin on December 23rd and run through January 4th, 2014.  One vote per email address will be permitted each day.  ‘Most Representative’ photos are being solicited.  In addition, photographs will be placed in the lighthouse in April along with the new time capsules.  Reservations for ‘The Next Generation’ time capsules are currently being taken.  To purchase a ‘Next Generation’ time capsule or get more information please visit this website. Purchases of time capsule (4”, 6”, 8” and 10” pvc pipe containers) are tax-deductible with proceeds going to the Harbor History Museum and the BoatShop.
